The Doctor

That’s why I love this Doctor. He is flawed. He can be selfish. Without the capacity to do the wrong thing, doing the right thing doesn’t mean as much. That he recognizes his life is empirically more important than Wilf’s but refuses to use that as a pretext for letting Wilf die is what makes him a hero.

Consider the cornerstone story and hero of Western civilization. Jesus goes to Gethsemane to pray that the crucifixion can be avoided. It’s a moment of weakness, but it shows that he’s human and fallible and it makes his actions heroic. If he was just God in his humankin persona no one would care; he’d be the same old infallible God, but with more pooping. That Jesus and The Doctor can choose the wrong thing, but do choose the right thing lends their stories weight.

Same goes for villains. A villain isn’t really villainous unless they can feel empathy, compassion, and affection for others. Consider Jessica Jones’ Kilgrave. He can feel affection for Jessica and that means that he chooses not to feel anything for his other victims. An evil robot is an robot that follows evil orders. An evil human is truly evil because they’ve turned their back on good.

WHO WAS HER

WAS SHE HIS MOTHER??

GJDJDFGLDLDK

well considering that supposedly they can regenerate as different genders….I don’t see why she couldn’t also be him from a different point in his timeline

I LIKE THAT IDEA A LOT. quick question tho where did the idea that that’s his mother come from in the first place?

It comes from the actress and her direction. Check out the wiki.

I like it better when it could be anyone that The Doctor knows. She could be a member of his family, She could be a wife, daughter, ex-girlfriend, best friend, favorite writer, the one good waitress at the Arcadia Denny’s.

Billions perished when The Doctor destroyed Gallifrey*. The Doctor didn’t know all of them, but that hardly matters, All of them were people. They were all mothers, daughters, sons, and Denny’s waitresses.

Using The Moment didn’t just deprive The Doctor of a few old friends and the best place to get a Grand Slam after The Franchise Wars; he destroyed entire families and networks of people. He killed a civilization full of real people who knew each other.

Keeping The Woman mysterious underscores that fact. Even if she isn’t his mother, he had a mother and she would’ve burned with the rest. Even if she wasn’t his daughter, he had a daughter and she would’ve burned with the rest. Even if he had a mentor in school who took him under her wing and helped him get through it, she would’ve burned.

If he personally didn’t have granddaughter, there were granddaughters on Gallfrey when it burned and he burned them and then he did it again in “The End of Time.”

“The Stolen Earth” & “Journey’s End”

I’ll drink, I’ll do squats, and I’ll probably cry a bit before it’s all over.

They honestly just spend the first 12 minutes of this thing ramping the stakes up to 12.

Oh shit. Jack just died.

tfw everyone but the Daleks ship it.

Whelp. 9 minutes left in the episode. Rose Tyler is paired off with Human!Doctor. Nothing more to see here. Good night, everybody.

#I really want to take a second to praise David for his acting here #because all you need to do is look at his face and you can see that everything is absolutely horribly wrong #and the most terrible part is how subtle it is #he doesn’t look outright panicked or distraught #he looks passive #and that’s the worst expression the doctor can have #because at least when there’s fear or desperation you know he doesn’t want to give up #you know he’s going to fight and he’s going to keep trying #but this is resignation #pure resignation #he realizes exactly what’s happened and what has to happen and how much it is going to tear him apart #and that face says there is no other option #all he can do is let it happen #it burns him alive but he can’t show it #he knows he can’t because it’s going to be hard enough for her #and he needs to be strong here #he needs to shut down and be as cold and detached as he can get #because it’s better than letting the pain in #it’s better than showing her exactly how much this is going to kill him #because that will only make it worse #that face says more in its subtleties than it ever could in outright expression #bravo David #truly

Meanwhile, Catherine Tate is in the middle of doing a dynamite David Tennant.
