The Royale

Isn’t it cool how this episode…um…has actors…and those actors just say all of these things that are things? It forces us to ask so many deep questions like “ew?” and “what?” and “no, where’s the real episode?”

Did I come down on Derek too hard on calling them “lasers”? I mean we decontruct elements, calling Data a “robot” and phasers “guns” because those are the story elements they represent. Is “lasers” too far a departure?

I said “Will and Grace” when I meant the much more obscure “Hope & Gloria.” The 90’s had its naming conventions and stuck to them.

(Most) Every Thursday, I make a brief development blog on my card/board game, Dead Parents Dungeon (DPD). It’s a fantasy-themed, light-hearted game about families and dungeons.

Current Progress: Hurtling Towards Prototyping at a Snail’s Pace

“If your theme isn’t at common it’s not your theme,” is a common quote of Magic: the Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater. Now, Dead Parents Dungeon doesn’t have commonalities, but the point of the quote is that whatever your theme is, it should come up in your cards.

Before I start the prototyping by starting the set skeleton, I have to ask, “what are my themes?”

Dice types are Combat, Magic, and Skill. [C] represents a combat die while C is a combat result or combat specialty. [M] is the same for magic, etc. There’s currently an issue where fighting monsters is also called “combat,” but the [C] represents just plain old sword-in-badguy ability.

[C] results: CS/C/C/C/C/CC

[M] results: blank/blank/CS/M/MM/MMM

[S] results: blank/MS/CS/S/S/SS

It’s hard to work with good episodes and despite what I said last week, Measure of a Man is probably the best of Season 2. But Derek does what he does best and cuts through my blind adulation. This is what we’re here for.

I mean, Derek is probably not great at poker, but we’re on the same page here. #LouvoisingIt

I like doing Minecraft News for Adults. The news gets stuck in my craw and talking/writing about it is the only way to get it out.

Laziness is one reason I don’t get these out every week, but the fact that I’m not satisfied with the end result is another. MCNFA is missing both editorial focus and a tone that matches my speaking style. I’m aiming for a calm, even rendition–kind of a ‘podcast you listen to in the background’ feel–but it gets emotional and uneven in places and the lack of a script for the back half hurts.

Also that back half becomes a blog so I need tighter scripting there instead of bullet points.

As a guy who’s been doing a podcast for three years and still can’t reliably get an episode up on Mondays, “put more work into it” is an obvious, if comprehensive, bit of criticism.

It’s a good one? The premise is sound. The acting is good. The action is a tiny bit contrived, but I forgive it.

I’m kidding about the Data/Microsoft bit; we all know Data is an Android. Is this the best episode of the second season? I personally love the upcoming “Peak Performance,” but I know I’m biased.

Also, those Klingon lawyers and chefs are in Deep Space Nine. Sorry about the sound quality; there’s a mic issue with these episodes that builds on my already subpar enunciation. Working on it.
